Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has revealed that Usman Khawaja did not inform national selectors of his retirement. McDonald also confirmed that Khawaja will feature in the Sydney Test.
Commenting Cameron GreenDue to the change in batting position, McDonald said it was due to team balance and not poor form. Green moved because he is fitting in among the senior players and has not yet settled into a single role.
McDonald also confirmed that Beau Webster is still in contention for the Sydney Test. He said Marnus Labuschagne did not show enough intention in the last two tests after a good start to the series.
Khawaja’s future is under discussion due to his age and Australia’s long break after the Ashes. The 39-year-old did not open due to a back problem and skipped the Brisbane Test. He returned to the Adelaide Test at No. 4 with scores of 82 and 40.
Even after missing an optional training session, Usman Khawaja did not discuss retirement. Andrew McDonald has confirmed that he will play the Sydney Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
“We’ve been very clear that we haven’t had a conversation,” McDonald said before practice. “The speculation is coming from outside. He’s with his family right now, he’s got a few days off. We’re moving to Sydney, and we’re still discussing where the players are and speaking directly with them. And there’s no indication from my side that he’s calling Sydney.”
“So that will be something we discuss, but his performance in this calendar year has been good enough to warrant selection, so I would say he would be there to mark the center in Sydney.”
“Our challenge is that if one of our great players retires, we have to recognize it. But until we are clear about someone’s future, it is very difficult.”
