Heavyweight boxer confirmed to be in stable condition following accident
Antoine Joshua was involved in a road accident in Nigeria on Monday which left two people dead.
The former two-time heavyweight champion reportedly suffered only minor injuries.
Joshua was in the back of a vehicle on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, near Sagamu, an area linked to his family heritage, when the accident occurred. Police confirmed that two people died following the collision.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, explained the circumstances of the incident, saying: “The accident occurred as a result of a burst tire on AJ’s vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle swerved into the stationary truck parked along the road.
“At this time, I am aware of two deaths and Joshua himself was transported to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment. The command will issue a press release soon.”
Joshua had spent time in Africa following his sixth round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami less than two weeks ago.
Images circulating online, which have not been verified, appear to show the boxer sitting shirtless in the passenger area of a damaged vehicle, surrounded by broken windows and looking shaken.
Promoter Eddie Hearn also addressed the situation, speaking to Daily Mail Sport while on holiday: “I’m on family holiday and I woke up to the news of this incident,” he said.
“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on his condition, but luckily he looks fine from what I’ve seen in the footage.
“We are awaiting more information on what happened and will update in due course.”
Joshua’s victory over Paul marked the 29th victory of his professional career in 33 fights and appeared to bring him closer to a long-discussed potential meeting with fellow Briton Tyson Fury, who is currently retired.
