President Donald Trump On Monday, he appeared open to additional military action against Iran if the country tries to build up its ballistic weapons reserves and reestablish its nuclear program. However, he urged the country to negotiate.
“Now I hear that Iran is trying to rebuild itself, and if that’s the case, we’ll have to overthrow them. We’ll knock them over. We’ll knock them out of harm’s way. But I hope that doesn’t happen,” Trump said, alongside the Israeli prime minister. Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I heard that Iran wants to make a deal. If they want to make a deal, that’s a lot smarter,” the president continued.
Trump spoke with reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida ahead of a meeting with Netanyahu, which comes at a difficult time for the Middle East and amid heightened tensions between the two countries. Israel and Iran.
NBC News reported Earlier this month, Netanyahu and Israeli officials grew increasingly concerned that Iran was trying to increase its ballistic missile production — which was damaged earlier this year by Israeli strikes — and replenish nuclear enrichment sites. The United States bombed in June.
“If they continue with the missiles, yes. Nuclear, quickly,” Trump replied when asked if he would support Israeli strikes against Iran. “One will be yes, absolutely, and the other we will do immediately.”
Gaza is also expected to be discussed by the two world leaders on Monday, Trump said, as the White House seeks to advance a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.
The first phase of the agreement took effect in October and has mostly held. But a second phase – which would call on Hamas to disarm and demand the withdrawal of Israeli military forces – has proven more difficult.
Netanyahu said the second phase could not begin until Hamas returned the remains of the last deceased Israeli hostage. Trump said Monday he hoped to move to the second phase “as quickly as possible. But there has to be disarmament…we have to disarm with Hamas.”
Foreign policy has dominated Trump’s agenda recently.
On Sunday, he received the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago. The Trump administration is facilitate negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in an attempt to end the years-long conflict between the two nations. During the meeting, Zelensky reportedly asked the United States for security guarantees up to 50 years for Ukraine, although the current 20-point peace plan provides guarantees for 15 years.
Trump also said he had a “very productive” call with the Russian president. Vladimir Putin Monday, although he said some “thorny issues” stood in the way of ending the war.
“We have some issues that we’re going to hopefully resolve, and if we resolve them, you’ll have peace,” Trump said.
At Monday’s short, wide-ranging press conference, Trump provided an update on his months-long pressure campaign against Venezuela.
The president confirmed a U.S. strike on a drug loading facility in Venezuela, marking an escalation in his campaign against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
“There was a major explosion in the dock area where they were loading the boats with drugs…So we hit all the boats, and now we’ve hit the area. It’s the implementation area that’s where they’re implementing, and it’s not there anymore,” Trump said.
Trump recently called the government a “foreign terrorist organization,” ordered a complete blockade of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving the country, and targeted alleged Venezuelan drug boats.
