Chappell Roan changed his mind about Brigitte Bardot — her muse for “Red Wine Supernova” — after learning of the late actress’ right-wing political views.
Following Bardot dies at age 91Roan, 27, was one of many celebrities who paid tribute to the actress. “Rest in peace Madame Bardot. She was my inspiration for the red supernova,” Roan wrote via his Instagram Story on Sunday, December 28, after news of Bardot’s passing was confirmed.
Roan deleted his post and denounced Bardot in a separate post on Monday, December 29, after discovering that Bardot’s political affiliation was not in line with his own beliefs.
“Holy shit I didn’t know all this insane shit Ms. Bardot was all about,” Roan wrote via his Instagram story. “Obviously I don’t condone this. Very disappointing to learn.”
Bardot became an international superstar in the 1950s and 1960s after her sex appeal and acting talents were revealed in films such as And God created woman, The truth And Contempt.
The French bombshell retired from acting at the age of 39 in 1973 to focus on animal rights activism. However, it was his support for the far right, which some have called extremist in nature, that ultimately led to his Bardot becoming controversial in some circles.

She condemned the increase in the number of immigrants in her home country France, particularly Muslims, according to the Associated Press. (Bardot was fined several times for inciting hatred against Muslims.)
THE Two weeks in September The star was also criticized for allegedly “inciting racial hatred and comparing homosexuals and pedophiles” in his book, A cry in the silenceby The Hollywood Reporter.
In one book chapterBardot called gay people “cheap assholes or circus freaks” and suggested the LGBTQ+ community be closeted like it was in the 50s and 60s.
Bardot turned heads again in 2018 when she clapped at the #MeToo movement. “I thought it was nice to be told I was beautiful or that I had a nice little ass,” she said at the time, seemingly downplaying the severity of many actresses’ traumatic experiences with men in power during their own careers.
Roan, for his part, paid tribute to Bardot in his 2023 success “Red Wine Supernova” singing: “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot / She showed me things I didn’t know.”
Although she sang of Bardot in a positive light, she no longer holds her in high regard, according to her statement Monday.
Roan’s opposition to Bardot’s political views is not surprising because of the way he expresses himself. she has been throughout her own career to accept all people, especially those who have been persecuted for those they love.
“There are so many things in the world that are so ‘fuck you’ and then there’s this. The only thing that matters more is joy to me. And protecting that and peace and safety,” Roan, who identifies as a lesbian, told her fans during the last of three shows of Los Angeles in October. “So I hope you know that when you’re here, you’re safe, and I want you to be here, you can be who you are tonight.”
She added: “You are cherished for everything that you are. Even if you are not queer, I hope you know that I include you. It’s not just for gay people. Thanks for being there and support myself and each other. This is the biggest show I’ve ever had. So thank you.
