Eurostar cancels all trains from London after power outage in Channel Tunnel

Eurostar has canceled all trains from London to Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels until further notice after a power outage in the Channel Tunnel caused a Le Shuttle train to break down.

Staff at London St Pancras station have asked Eurostar passengers to postpone their travel plans and rebook for a later date.

By midday, at least a dozen Eurostar services between the UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands had been canceled – and many more had also been delayed or changed.

Separately, the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle service has also suspended trains between Folkestone and Calais due to what it describes as a “power supply problem”.

National Rail said major disruption was expected to last until the end of the day.

Eurostar said: “Services to and from London are suspended until further notice due to overhead power supply issues in the Channel Tunnel, followed by a Le Shuttle train breakdown.

“We advise our customers to rebook their trip for another day, with free exchanges available.

“We apologize for the disruption and will continue to keep our customers informed of the latest information.”

Ben Clark, from Bedfordshire, told the BBC he had been stuck on the Shuttle in Calais with his wife and three daughters since 10am local time (0900 GMT).

“The first two and a half hours weren’t too bad, but the girls got restless in the last half hour, so we let them run around the boarding car to burn off some energy,” he said.

“Some people get angry but there is nothing to do, others sleep in their cars. We have used up our snacks and we no longer have a plan B or C.”

According to Eurostar, passengers can rearrange their plans for free or cancel their reservation and get a refund or e-voucher.

Meanwhile, delays have also been reported on the Le Shuttle service which transports road vehicles on trains across the Channel.

On the British side at Folkestone, Le Shuttle reported there was a delay of around three and a half hours from the booked departure time.

Matthew Webber, from Suffolk, said he had been stuck for hours and was unsure if he and his group would be able to continue their journey.

“Not much information is being released, which is poor,” he told the BBC.

“Lots of queues and everyone is waiting to get into the tunnel. Conditions are very busy and people are leaving to take a ferry.”

At the Calais terminal in France, the delay is currently around three hours.

Steph Roberts, from Ashford, Kent, told the BBC she had been stuck at Calais terminal with her husband Robert and their bulldog Dempsey since 10.30am.

She had spent two weeks in France to see her parents and family for Christmas.

Ms Roberts said: “We have not received any updates or received any food or water.

“We just spent time scrolling through social media and reading magazines. I also went out walking the dog.”

The Shuttle said crews were working to resolve power issues.
