The first round began in the second week of the EFL season. A new preliminary round also took place at the end of July between the two clubs promoted from the National League last season and the teams which finished 21st and 22nd in Ligue 2.
There will be split weeks in the third round for clubs in Champions League and Europa League.

All nine Premier League teams involved in the European competition will join the third round of the EFL Cup in September.
The other 11 clubs will join one round earlier, during the week of August 25.
All EFL Cup matches will be available on Sky Sports or Sky Sports+ as part of a deal between the league and the broadcaster to show more than 1,000 of the 1,891 EFL, EFL Cup and Bristol Street Motors Trophy matches.
The winners of the EFL Cup receive a place in the UEFA Conference League play-off stage unless they qualify through another route for the European competition.
Newcastle were an example of the rule in action in 2024/25, instead qualifying for the Champions League thanks to their league position.
This meant that their Conference League play-off place went to the higher-placed team who had not qualified for the European competition via their league position.
If they finish level after 90 minutes, the EFL Cup matches will go straight to penalties until the semi-finals, which will be played over two legs.
If the score is tied after the second leg, overtime and – if necessary – penalties are used to decide between the teams.
The final is a one-off match at Wembley Stadium, with extra time and penalties if necessary.
Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 on penalties in the 2021/22 final and won the same match after extra time in 2023/24 thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s winning goal in the 118th minute.
