Justin Hood produced one of the greatest performances of the World Darts Championship as he hit 11 consecutive doubles without missing en route to a 4-0 victory over Josh Rock in the last 16.
Hood was 11 for 11 finishing doubles with a 3-0 lead in sets and 2-0 in legs, and was one dart away from a perfect match, only to miss a shot at doubles 16.
Nevertheless, he broke the PDC record previously held by Jonny Clayton by beating James Wade in the 2021 World Masters final with 10/11 in doubles.
“It’s not a fairy tale. I know what I can do and it’s good to prove it here,” said Alexandra Palace debutant Hood. Sky Sports Darts after completing the victory.
“I was thinking about it [the doubles]. It was on the screen! The only time I had a little nervousness was when I was throwing to win in the penultimate inning.
“It’s very overwhelming. I’m not used to this. I usually get hate messages. It’s crazy.”
Rock watched in disbelief for most of the match while Hood just couldn’t miss. But the Northern Irishman took the first two sets to make up his mind, losing both as the crowd began to realize they were witnessing something special.
Hood cruised through the third set 3-1 in sets, then won the next two sets early in the fourth set to be on the verge of perfection.
However, he missed D16 on a check-out of 143 and actually lost the stage after three more misses before winning the next stage to continue his remarkable run, finishing with a record of 12/16 in doubles.
The 32-year-old, who lives in Somerset, will face Michael van Gerwen or Gary Anderson in the quarter-finals, with the two former world champions playing on Tuesday evening, live on Sky Sports Darts.
Fifth seed Jonny Clayton avoided an upset with a 4-2 win in the round of 16 against Swedish debutant Andreas Harrysson, who pushed his opponent hard.
The first four sets were split with three deciding sets, which underlined the intensity of the competition. However, Harrysson dug deep and went 2-0 up in the fifth set before missing three darts to blank Clayton in that set.
Clayton stepped back, held the throw, then pounced on four more missed darts from Harrysson to steal the set in the final round. All five legs went to the sixth and ultimately the final set, so Clayton crossed the line to book a place in the last eight against Ryan Searle.
“There’s a lot on his mind, obviously moving up to world number 4 was part of it, and to be fair to Andreas, every time I looked up he was hitting doubles,” said Clayton, who currently holds a guaranteed place in the Premier League Darts as he is in the top four in the PDC rankings. Sky Sports Darts.
“It was tough. Ok, I didn’t play my best, there were a lot of loose darts, but that’s what pressure does to you. And that’s what Andreas did, he kept me under pressure the whole time.”
Polish number 1 Krzysztof Ratajski will make his second appearance in the quarter-finals after beating Luke Woodhouse 4-2 to set up a clash against Luke Littler.
Woodhouse became the second player after Gary Anderson to come within a dart of a nine-dart in the third set, but ended up losing the leg and the set.
Although he pulled back to make it 2-2, he never seemed to fully recover from that adrenaline rush as Ratajski won six out of eight rounds to cross the finish line.
