Former Chelsea winger Gael Kakuta scored twice as DR Congo cruised to victory en route to the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tanzania and Tunisia secured the last two available places for the round of 16 on Tuesday, with Botswana condemned to elimination before kick-off.

And Kakuta – who signed for Chelsea as a teenager in 2009 but now plays in Turkey – stole the show with a goal in each half and an assist.

The 34-year-old opened the scoring for Nathanael Mbuku with a brilliant backheel, then scored from the penalty spot to put DR Congo 2-0 ahead.

Kakuta, who also played for Fulham and Bolton in the Premier League, sealed the victory with a cool finish into the corner of the net on the hour mark.

DR Congo finishes second in Group D with seven points behind Senegal and will now face Algeria in Rabat on Tuesday January 6, 2026.
