In addition to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory, Mozambique’s reward for beating Gabon in their second match of the 2025 edition is a guaranteed place in the round of 16 with one match to play.
The team ranked 102nd in the world will face Nigeria in Fez on Monday (1900 GMT) in the round of 16, unless they beat five-time champions Cameroon in their final group stage match, in which case they would meet South Africa, Burkina Faso or Sudan.
“This group deserves it,” said manager Chiquinho Conde, who oversaw a group stage exit with a point in the 2023 final.
“Wow, we went through so much difficulty and so much adversity to get here and achieve something this great when people least expected it.”
Cameroon beat Gabon 1-0 and drew 1-1 with Ivory Coast, putting David Pagou’s side level on points and tiebreakers with the title holders at the top of Group F.

“I must admit that I haven’t done any calculations,” said Pagou, who took over at the beginning of this month.
“We are in our own lane and we don’t know who is coming or not coming [in the knockout stage]. We know that Mozambique is a very complex and difficult team to face.
Junior Tchamadeu struck the shot that looped Ghislain Konan for an own goal to give Cameroon a point against Ivory Coast, but the Stoke City right-back is suspended against Cameroon for accumulated cautions.
Pagou, without midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa for the tournament due to injury, could rotate his team with the pressure of qualifying, just like his counterpart Condé.
The former Mozambique striker, who played in three AFCON tournaments, used Faizal Bangal for Manuel Kambala in midfield and Domingues for Stanley Ratifo in attack against Gabon.
Mozambique starts on eleven: Ernan Siluane, Diogo Calila, Mexer, Reinildo Mandava, Bruno Langa, Geny Catamo, Guima, Domingues, Alfons Amade, Witi, Faizal Bangal
Cameroon starting eleven: Davis Epassy, Che Malone, Samuel Kotto, Nouhou Tolo, Junior Tchamadeu, Arthur Avom, Carlos Baleba, Darlin Yongwa, Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Kofane, Danny Namaso
