Gary Neville took aim Ruben Amorimthe “bizarre” decision of Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers, handing the visitors their third point of the campaign.
Manchester United’s topsy-turvy 2025 ended with a poor 1-1 draw at home to bottom side Wolves as boss Rob Edwards picked up a first point since taking charge.
Three weeks after triumphing 4-1 at Molineux, Amorim’s side struggled in the absence of that night’s scorers Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount.
The Red Devils were without eight senior players in total but also struggling were Wolves, who bounced back from Joshua Zirkzee’s opener thanks to the man whose deflection volleyed the ball home.
Ladislav Krejci headed home the visitors’ equalizer just before the break and was enough to end an 11-game losing streak in the league. Premier League.
Wolves fans cheered their team enthusiastically as their 19th match of a miserable campaign brought a third point and the first positive result of Edwards’ reign.
As for United, boss Amorim’s side failed to build on their Boxing Day win over Newcastle and Patrick Dorgu saw a 90th-minute goal ruled out for offside. No wonder boos greeted the final whistle.
It’s another step backwards for Amorim at Old Trafford, who will wonder where he will find his consistency after another frustrating display. It remains to be seen whether he will view the draw against Wolves as a sign that his 3-4-2-1 system should be abandoned. There is no denying that United have struggled to get back into their manager’s lineup.
Like many at Old Trafford, Neville was calling for Man United to attack at Old Trafford, especially when Amorim changed their system in the second half. But this offense was forced to make do without Zirkzee in the second half after he was hooked at the break.
Although it remains to be seen whether his replacement was forced, Neville was quick to call it “weird.” on Sky Sports commentary as he watched another disappointing display.
The former Man United man said: “He will highlight injuries and the CAN. But every team is in a similar situation. I’m not sure what happened with Zirkzee. If he’s not injured, it’s a weird replacement to make.”

The striker was certainly fit enough to keep his place at the break, especially as Amorim were forced to turn to youngster Bendito Mantato deep in the second half.
If Zirkzee’s replacement wasn’t due to injury, then other questions could arise about his future. The striker has been largely out of favor this season and that is unlikely to change when Bryan Mbeumo returns to the team after the AFCON.
If interest arises, he could follow many others before him and leave the club shortly after initially making his move.
