The great Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be set to end a nine-year hiatus from the ring and return to the professional scene next year, after failed negotiations for a world title contest opened the door to a lucrative opportunity.
Mayweather hung up his gloves after a stoppage victory over Conor McGregor in the famous “Money Fight” between the respective boxing and mixed martial arts superstars in 2017.
Since then, “TBE” has fought only in exhibitions and raked in more money, but a return to professional fighting has been discussed several times, especially after the return of his eternal rival Manny Pacquiao this summer.
Pacquiao was only able to get a draw on his returnbeing on the verge of dethroning Mario Barrios and winning the WBC welterweight title despite a long period of inactivity.
Yet the Filipino icon had been linked with another world title fight, with strong suggestions that a the announcement of a meeting with WBA champion Rolando Romero was imminent.
However, it is now understood that negotiations for this piece have failed and that ‘Rolly’ will instead have to fulfill his mandate and attempt to defend his belt against Uzbekistan’s Shakhram Giysaov.
Talk with The ringGiyasov’s manager, Vadim Kornilov, explained that he and his fighter would have been willing to wait for their shot if the fight between Pacquiao and Romero had happened.
“I don’t think an exception works when there’s no fight and it’s not announced,”
“If [the Romero-Pacquiao fight] what was happening is one thing; we have a lot of respect for a fight like this and for Pacquiao in particular.
“But when there is no fight, I believe the rules must be followed and Rolly must fight Giyasov. I never understand why some fighters get exceptions and don’t have to fight their proxies.”
As a result, Mayweather can now be considered the favorite for Pacquiao’s next outing, after months of rumors that the couple would meet again more than a decade after their first meeting.
