George Clooney Details His Past Friendship With President Donald Trump


George Clooney looks back on his past friendship with President Donald Trump.

“I knew him very well,” Clooney, 64, said. Variety in an interview published Tuesday, December 30. “He called me a lot and once tried to help me get into the hospital to see a back surgeon. I would see him at clubs and restaurants.”

The Oscar winner added that Trump’s attitude changed once politics entered his life. “He’s a big idiot,” he told the outlet. Well, he was. Everything has changed. (Trump was elected president in 2016 and again in 2024.)

Clooney, who has been an outspoken liberal in the industry, added that it was a “testing” time for the United States. His comments come a day after he and his wife Amal Clooney, along with their 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, were granted French citizenship, according to a naturalization decree published by a French newspaper. Official Journal published on Saturday December 27.

The couple own a farm in the south of France, which includes 100 acres of vineyards and 1,200 olive trees and serves as their primary residence. The couple also own additional homes in England and Italy.

Clooney previously spoke about his decision to raise his children on a farm after growing up on a farm himself in his home state of Kentucky, explaining how his view of a more rural life had changed over the years.

“A lot of my life was spent on a farm, and when I was a kid I hated the idea,” he told Squire in October about wanting to leave Los Angeles behind. “But now for them it’s like… they’re not on their iPad, you know? They’re having dinner with adults and they have to bring their own dishes. They have a much better life.”

The actor noted that he was “worried about raising” his twins in “the culture of Hollywood,” a place he said would “never” give them a “fair shake” in a normal life.

“France, they don’t give a damn about fame,” he explained. “I don’t want them to worry about the paparazzi. I don’t want them to be compared to someone else’s famous kids.”

Spending time on a farm also teaches his children to get their hands dirty, the actor said, recalling a time he asked them to repaint an old property fence that had suffered from sun damage.

“At first they take these little, tiny brush strokes, boop, boop, boop,” he joked. “And I say, ‘No, paint the damn fence.’ And then they go crazy painting the fence and they get covered in paint and oil and all that.

Although officially becoming French citizens is new for this family of four, George and Amal, 47, are well versed in the European way of life. The couple met at Lake Como, Italyin 2013, and married in Venice the following year.
