FC Cologne coach turns heads for unusual touchline antics

FC Cologne have started their Bundesliga campaign in perfect fashion, winning both of their opening matches, the latest being a dominant 4-1 win over Freiburg. But while the results were impressive, it was manager Lukas Kwasniok who caught the attention.

Instead of the usual suit or tracksuit, the Polish coach turned heads by donning Cologne’s match jerseys on the sidelines.

He wore the away shirt in the opening weekend against Mainz, before switching to the third shirt for the Freiburg clash.

Explaining the decision, Kwasniok said he wanted to show his dedication to the club.

“I saw the presentation of the jersey at a sponsored event and I got goosebumps. And the same thing with the black jersey. Then the decision was clear to me: if I have the right to do it, I will do it”, he said in a post-match interview after Cologne’s opening day victory over Mainz. “I want to commit to this club, and I do, and I also wear this jersey with pride.”

With a smile, he also admitted that there was a personal reason behind this choice: “I thought the combination of black and white-red made you look a little slimmer. From what I saw on TV after the match, it didn’t really work.”

Cologne now sits third in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt. And with momentum on their side, it’s unlikely to bother if their manager continues to wear the club’s colors every weekend.
