Entain figures show the Grand National was once again the biggest betting event of the year

The sports betting company Entertain gave an overview of the most popular betting events in the world, with the Grand National taking the crown again.

The company has brands operating around the world, including Ladbrokes (UK and Australia), Coral (UK), BetMGM (North America), Eurobet (Italy), SuperSport (Croatia), STS (Poland), Sportingbet (South America), TAB (New Zealand), BetCity (Netherlands) and several others.

THE analysis covers a global mix of sports and cultures, but it is the UK-based Grand National that remains the clear leader, this is a popular horse race held annually at Aintree in the north of England. Its first edition took place in 1839 and became known as a large-scale event.

The second most popular betting event of the year, according to Entain, was the Super Bowl. The company described this as a “global betting phenomenon”. They also say the data has highlighted how standalone game shows are key drivers of betting activity, whether in primetime slot playoffs like Monday and Thursday Night Football.

Speaking of the NFL, two games in the first few weeks of the 2025 season made Entain’s top 20, the first being the season opener and the second being the Detroit Lions vs. the Baltimore Ravens.

World football also makes the list, with the company saying: “Finals dominate, including the Champions League final (5th), Club World Cup final (7th), Nations League final (9th) and South America’s Copa Libertadores final (19th).

“The Europa League final (15th) also features more prominently, having pitted two struggling Premier League giants against one another. The Champions League semi-finals and quarter-finals appear in the top 50, reflecting the tournament’s global appeal.”

Domestic football was also at the top, with Manchester United v Liverpool being the most popular domestic match in the world. The US Masters was the third largest betting event, with golf as a whole being another popular category.

Greg Ferris, general manager, Sport in Entainsaid: “From Cheltenham to the Super Bowl, and from the Champions League to the Libertadores final, this list shows how far our clients’ interests span continents and sports.

“The Grand National and the Super Bowl are cultural phenomena that transcend sports and are annual traditions for recreational customers. Beyond these two major events, the diversity of the top 50 in different sports reflects our global reach and the varied passions of millions of fans around the world.”
