Explosive fire kills several people at Swiss Alps bar on New Year’s Day

An explosive fire in a bar in the Swiss Alps killed several people and injured others during New Year’s celebrations, police said.

The fire occurred in the Alpine ski resort municipality from Crans-Montana, Switzerland, police said.

“The fire broke out around 1:30 this morning in a bar called ‘Le Constellation’,” said police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion. “More than a hundred people were in the building and we are seeing many injuries and many deaths.”

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire, police said.

“We are only at the beginning of our investigation, but this is an internationally renowned ski resort with many tourists,” Lathion said.

A press conference has been scheduled by the police for 10 a.m. The community is located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, approximately 40 km north of the Matterhorn.
