Manchester United have certainly spent money in recent years, even if it hasn’t brought them any closer to the success they enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson.
They have spent around £2 billion since their greatest ever manager retired in 2013, and while not every signing has been a success, some have.
The most expensive purchase at that time was Paul Pogbatheir club’s record signing. He cost Juventus £89mwhich also represented a world record at the time, in 2016. He helped the club win the Europa League and Carabao Cup, demonstrating mesmerizing technical abilities.
Now United could be ready to make another Pogba-style signing and break their transfer record again.
Multiple reports suggest United will break their transfer record in 2026.
The English duo Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are two of the strongest bondsboth of which could cost £100 million.
However, according to reports in Spainthe Red Devils are “ready to offer” a record amount to the club to sign another England international, Jude Bellingham.
It wouldn’t be easy to lure the Real Madrid star away from the Spanish capital, but United are said to be ‘determined to make a statement in the market’.
Indeed, this would be a huge statement from That of Rubén Amorim side if they signed Bellingham. It obviously wouldn’t be a cheap deal, with United reportedly set to put a staggering £130 million on the table in a bid to bring the Birmingham-born superstar to Old Trafford.
Few midfielders across the world are better than Madrid’s number 5, Bellingham. According to Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraeshe’s the “best midfielder in the world”, which is certainly high praise, but it’s certainly accurate judging by his numbers in recent years.
The 2025/26 campaign has been slower for the Englishman. He missed the start with a shoulder injury and, since returning to full fitness, has contributed nine goals and assists in 20 appearances.
It is important to discuss his contributions for Los Blancos throughout his time at the club. Operating all over the pitch, he found the back of the net 43 times and provided 32 assists. His production has been ridiculous, especially since he is a midfielder.
His underlying numbers are also extraordinary. Compared to other European midfielders over the last 365 days, he has created 1.89 chances and made 1.75 shots per 90 minutes. This places him in the top 9% and 1% on these measures.

It’s easy to see how the 22-year-old could be the new version of Pogba for United. Not only would the Madrid star cost the club a record amount like the Frenchman, but he would also join two of Europe’s heavyweights, Los Blancos and Juve, in Pogba’s case.
However, they are also stylistically similar. Pogba was also famous for his ability to score goals from midfield, scoring 39 times in a United shirt. He could score all types of goals, including long-range screamers, poacher goals and headers. This certainly rings true for Bellingham.
Not only that, but the technical genius that both possess is an obvious similarity. It is not uncommon for both players to be seen dancing away from an opponent under pressure and streaking away into space, or performing an incredible skill to control the ball.
Someone who connects the two players is Zinedine Zidane, connected to Bellingham via Real Madrid and to Pogba via Juve and France. He has praised both in the past, calling his compatriot a player who “knows how to do everything in the field” and said his fellow Los Blancos number five is “a player who does incredible things.”
There’s no doubt that £130 million is a huge investment, but Bellingham is surely worth that kind of price. He is a dominant and technically gifted midfielder, and could well be seen as the second coming of Pogba in that sense. If United can pull off this deal, it would be the move of the year.
