Amir Khan relish the prospect of Teofimo Lopez And Shakur Stevenson finally locked horns and delivered their verdict ahead of their highly anticipated January 31 showdown.
Brooklyn’s Lopez will put his WBO welterweight title on the line at iconic Madison Square Garden – a place where Khan himself suffered defeat at the hands of Terence Crawford in 2019.
Two of Khan’s biggest wins came at 140 pounds, where he defeated Marcos Maidana. and dethroned Zab Judah, and the former unified champion introduced Lopez-Stevenson with unmistakable enthusiasm during an appearance on the Boxing at the clubhouse podcast.
“What a fight!” »
Asked by co-host Spencer Oliver to make his choice, Khan didn’t hesitate.
“Lopez.
Lopez is a very good fighter. I trained with him. I got it on the pads. He hits hard. He is a good all-around boxer – skilled. A lot of people don’t give him credit for how good a boxer he is. He’s the type of guy that when he has to turn it up, he does it. And I think with someone like Shakur, he’ll have to step up. »
Stevenson will be moving up to welterweight for the first time and last time out he showed his elite skills in a career-defining win over William Zepeda. Khan, however, believes there are still unanswered questions surrounding the undefeated American.
“Shakur, we haven’t really seen him in the deep end. Look at Lopez. He’s fought guys like Lomachenko. He’s beaten big names along the way.”
Lopez’s victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 transformed his career, catapulting him into boxing’s elite. A year later, however, he suffered a shock defeat to George Kambosos Jr, a setback that marked the start of a period of inconsistency. That narrative was rewritten in 2023 when Lopez produced a scintillating performance to dethrone former undisputed champion Josh Taylor and win the WBO super lightweight title.
Lopez hasn’t quite reached those same heights since, and with Stevenson arriving in New York in late January, he’ll once again have to do his best to prove he still belongs at the top of the division.
