England have announced a 12-man squad for the fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2025-26 against Australiawhich is scheduled to be played at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from January 4-8. With the Ashes already decided in record time, England will aim to build on their momentum following their morale-boosting victory in Melbourne and end the tour on a high note.
After enduring a difficult campaign that saw them concede the urn in just 11 days, England finally tasted success on Australian soil in the fourth Test in Melbourne. Led by Ben StokesEngland recorded a remarkable four-wicket victory in a dramatic two-day contest, ending a winless streak in Australia that spanned more than 5,000 days.
One of the most important takeaways from the team’s announcement is the return of the young offline player. Shoaib Bashirwho has been recalled as England look to bolster their rotation resources for the SCG Test. Traditionally known for offering more support to spinners compared to other Australian venues, the Sydney surface is expected to play a key role in England’s team mix.
Bashir’s inclusion signals England’s intention to challenge Australia with a touch of spice, particularly as the match progresses into the final days. The management believes that his control and ability to come out on top could be crucial against the Australian middle order.
Alongside Bashir, the leader Matthew Potts was also recruited into the team for the series finale. Potts’ ability to maintain discipline and extract movement from the seams could provide England with valuable depth in the bowling attack.
However, England will miss the services of Gus Atkinsonwho was ruled out of the final test due to a hamstring injury suffered in Melbourne. Atkinson was the only omission from the team that won the fourth Test, making his absence a notable setback.
Although England can no longer win back the Ashes, the SCG Test presents the opportunity to restore pride and confidence. A win in Sydney would not only help England end the tour with two wins, but also provide a psychological boost ahead of future overseas assignments.
Key drummers such as Joe Racine And Harry Brook will once again be at the heart of England’s hopes, while overall options like Will Jacks add balance to the team.
