Senegal remain one of the favorites to win the Africa Cup of Nations after progressing through the group stage, but all is not well behind the scenes.
Rumors of discord between the Senegalese Football Federation and head coach Pape Thiaw had dogged the team since his arrival in Morocco and the FSF released a statement this morning denying suggestions that change was imminent.
The press release denounces “the persistence of certain rumors and information conveyed by part of the press, suggesting the existence of a conflict or underlying tensions between the federation and the national coach”.
He notably rejected allegations that the president of the FSF, Abdoulaye Fall, and Thiaw were not on good terms, adding: “Beyond strictly professional and hierarchical relations, the president of the FSF maintains extremely cordial and fraternal ties with the national coach and all members of the technical staff.”
This is not an ideal context for Senegal’s round of 16 clash against Sudan.
The Teranga Lions claimed seven points from their three Group D matches and beat Benin 3-0 on Tuesday.
They are heavy favorites to defeat Sudan, who qualified as one of the best third-ranked teams, and reach the last eight.
The Sudanese reached this stage without any of their players scoring a goal. Defeats to Algeria and Burkina Faso resulted in a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea thanks to Saul Coco’s own goal in the 74th minute.
This is the first time Sudan has reached this stage, a remarkable achievement given the unrest plaguing the country.
Senegalese captain Kalidou Koulibaly is suspended after being sent off against Benin. Thiaw is also without the injured Ilay Camara and Assane Diao.
Sunderland midfielder Habib Diarra could start.
Sudan cannot call on injured trio Abuagla Mohamed, ABBAKER ESA and Adil Salahelddin.
Senegal: Menddy; Diatta, Sarr, Dif; I Guye, P Sarra, Diarra; Mane, Night, Jackson
Sudan: Elneel; Awad, Saeed Ahmed, Karshom, Khamis; Taifour, Alhassan Omer; Nooh, Eisa, Abdelrahman
Kick-off on Saturday will be at 4pm UK time. In the UK, live coverage is provided on the Channel 4 YouTube channel. In the USA, beIN Sports is the tournament broadcaster.
Online live streaming is available on a wide range of devices via Channel 4 website and the beIN Sports app and app.
Senegal has too much firepower with Sadio Mane, Iliman Ndiaye and Nicolas Jackson, a formidable trio.
Add to that the energy of Habib Diarra and Pape Mate Sarr in midfield and it could be a long afternoon for Sudan, who can be proud of what they achieved in Morocco.
But their journey will end here.
