A Sun Valley, Nevada, man was sentenced to prison for embezzlement of three quarters of a million dollars casinos where he was employed.

Thomas Tonar, 61, worked for Dotty’s Nevada casinos throughout the state and, in a joint police effort, was arrested while on the run with the ill-gotten gains.

Upon his arrest, officers found Tonar in possession of the lion’s share of funds and carrying several firearms.

Arrested man was on the run for Dotty casino embezzlement

The Washoe County Prosecutor’s Office released a statement about Tonar and the illegal pocketing of profits before his arrest.

The release said Sparks Police Department officers were called to Tonar’s employer in 2025 amid speculation he was stealing money. CCTV footage later confirmed that Tonar withdrew money from several offices of Dotty’s Casino.

“Detectives from Sparks and Reno police joined together to investigate and discovered that the defendant had embezzled from six different locations, taking a total of $714,713.59,” the district attorney’s office said.

The man had attempted to flee the state with the proceeds of his ongoing theft and was later arrested by police.

“Tonar then left the state and traveled to California,” the statement said. “He was arrested several days later at a Sacramento motel during a joint law enforcement operation. A search of his property resulted in the recovery of $677,069 in stolen money and three firearms.”

Tonar’s sentence was imposed by Presiding Judge Barry Breslow on four counts of embezzlement valued at $100,000 or more, and two counts of embezzlement valued at less than $100,000.

The total sentence handed down against Tonar would be between eight and thirty years in prison.

In related news regarding a casino robberythree individuals were arrested after a coercive crime in a hotel room. The man and two women were indicted on multiple counts of intimidation and threatening to kill a guest at Bally’s Twin River resort with a knife.
