This article contains spoilers for the “Stranger Things” finale.
Fans aren’t exactly thrilled with the “Stranger Things” finale, with many feeling like it didn’t live up to expectations. But a social media user teased a follow-up movie in which Eleven would return to Hawkins to help the others fight a longtime enemy who was largely overlooked in the finale.
While there’s a range of reactions to the ending of “Stranger Things,” many fans who waited a decade for the show’s grand finale are deeply disappointed. If you were to skip the episode itself and spend a few minutes scrolling through the reactions on social media, you’d feel like this is a historical disaster of unprecedented proportions – an insult both to the characters themselves and to the legions of super-fans who have remained loyal to the series for 10 years.
‘Stranger Things’ Fans Are Furious At The Same Time About Eleven’s Fate In The Series Finale, baffled by the death of Kali Prasad by Linnea Berthelsenand amazed by the quantity of Unanswered questions left at the end of the Duffer Brothers’ monolithic streaming series. Even those of us who rather like the series and are quite happy with it have a hard time overlooking the many logical inconsistencies.
In the wake of all this, fans are dealing with their feelings in different ways, with some developing elaborate theories involving clues from the finale that hint at the release of future episodes, while others descend into full-blown crisis. Then there is user X (formerly Twitter) @elswraithwhich presented a sequel that seemed to fix just about every problem viewers had with the series finale.
The finale of ‘Stranger Things’ was a huge hit in theatersbut fans are understandably confused by so much that happened in the episode. Despite a 40-minute epilogue that attempted to tie up all the remaining threads, we still don’t know what happened to Brett Gelman’s Murray Bauman or Amybeth McNulty’s Vickie Dunne. Perhaps even more frustrating, “Stranger Things” tapped ’80s icon Linda Hamilton to play new character Dr. Kay.but after Eleven met her controversial end, Dr. Kay and his military lackeys apparently simply let the Hawkins children go. We hear nothing more of Hamilton’s villain after 18 months on the air, despite the fact that Dr. Kay spent years following the work of Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) to create more psychically gifted children.
But @elswraith’s suggestion for a sequel would help bring things full circle. User This would focus on Mike tracking down Eleven after the events of the finale, bringing her back to Hawkins, and reuniting the group to deal with the unresolved government storyline. The film would see “everyone working together to defeat the government” and would feature “no monsters.” […] just only the lab soldiers against them.
The X thread goes on to sum up how many fans feel: “I’m sorry but wdym [sic] they built this whole backwards base where they experimented for years to create more kids with powers, but the second El “dies” they’re just like, “Uh oh well, let’s move on to the next project!” » » It’s hard to argue with that, but the pitch seems simple and focused enough to work.
One of the big problems with “Stranger Things” is that the show is overloaded with characters and rich in lore – some of which you can’t even understand without seeing the spin-off of the play “Stranger Things”. But a follow-up movie focused solely on the gang versus the army would not only give the series creators the chance to tie up one of the biggest loose ends of the post-finale, but it would also allow for a much more focused story where fans wouldn’t need to pore over wikis and social media just to be able to figure out what’s going on.
This would also give the Duffer brothers a chance to explain what happened to Murray and Vickie. The former was instrumental in defeating Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), and the latter played an important role as the girlfriend of Maya Hawke’s Robin Buckley. They deserve better than being completely forgotten in the final third of the finale. There is also the problem of those poor pregnant women who were injected with Kali’s blood in the Hawkins laboratory. Sure, the Upside Down imploded at the end of the finale (probably taking those traumatized women with it), but don’t they also deserve some sort of posthumous revenge on the woman and military men who did this to them?
Unfortunately, at this point, it doesn’t appear that Netflix or the Duffers are interested in an “El Camino” style film. The ‘Stranger Things’ finale seems to have set up the long-awaited spin-offbut we already know that the series will only tangentially tie into the main series, so it seems unlikely that we’ll see this tantalizing social media pitch come to fruition.
