Newcastle hosts ‘Road to Wembley’ exhibition celebrating Carabao Cup triumph

Newcastle United’s long wait for domestic silverware finally came to an end last season when they won the Carabao Cup – and the club marked the historic moment with a one-of-a-kind display that captured the spirit of their journey to glory.

“The Road to Wembley”hosted at the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art in collaboration with VERSUS, offered fans an immersive documentary-style account of the Magpies’ cup success.

The exhibition featured more than 100 photographs by club photographers Serena Taylor, Harriet Massey and Michelle Mercer, each capturing intimate moments from the campaign. Visitors were also treated to cinema screenings, installations from fan group Wor Flags and the rare chance to stand alongside the Carabao Cup trophy itself.

The launch event included a panel featuring curators Ewen Spencer and Jimmy Turrell, alongside Newcastle legend Rob Lee, before the celebrations continued into the night with a DJ set.

The centerpiece of the story, of course, was Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the final – sealed by Alexander Isak’s decisive goal.

With the Swede no longer so subtly aspiring to move to Liverpool, the exhibition has perhaps accidentally acted as his own farewell tour – a reminder that while heroes don’t always stick around, the memories (and the trophy) are here to stay.
