Manchester United have taken the first steps in their long-term midfield planning by exploring the conditions required to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, according to Aerial sports.
Even if no immediate breakthrough is expected during the January transfer window, survey shows growing urgency for United to reshape its midfield before a crucial phase of reconstruction under Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils played out a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday and it was another game that proved they need quick additions to their squad, particularly in midfield.
Baleba has quickly become one of the highest-rated young midfielders in the Premier League.

He is an athletic midfielder who can contribute in both defensive and offensive positions, as he helps the team develop attacks and provides strength and security in front of the defense.
Brighton, well known for their tough negotiating stance, are said to be reluctant to consider a sale before the summer and will only accept offers in excess of £100million, a valuation which effectively closes the door to any realistic movement in January.
Baleba is the ideal profile that Man United are currently looking for, a dynamic and modern midfielder, capable of covering the pitch, breaking the lines with carries and providing defensive security.
However, the Seagulls’ tough stance and financial implications mean United are unlikely to pursue the deal this month, instead keeping him on their shortlist for future windows.
As a result, United continue to evaluate several alternative targets in Europe and the Premier League.
One such option is Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who has impressed with his energy, versatility and ability to contribute both offensively and defensively.

Another name under close scrutiny is Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. Wharton’s calm distribution and tactical intelligence have attracted the attention of several big clubs, and Palace are expected to resist mid-season interest unless a substantial offer arrives.
United are also monitoring João Gomes at Wolverhampton Wanderers, whose tenacity and pressing ability have made him a key figure at Molineux.
In France, Lille teenage sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi is seen as a potential long-term investment, while Olympiacos’ Christos Mouzakitis has also emerged as a data-backed option for the future.
Rather than overspending in January, the club appears to be focusing on gathering information, building relationships and positioning themselves for decisive action during the summer window, when more options are likely to become available.
