The 2025 African Cup of Nations The round of 16 pits the Ivory Coast And Burkina Faso is scheduled for Tuesday evening in Marrakech
Ivory Coast’s group stage campaign at AFCON 2025 was largely a success, with the reigning champions leading Group F on goal difference.
The Elephants opened their tournament on December 24 with a 1–0 victory against Mozambique, thanks to an Amad Diallo goal early in the second half.
This was followed by a 1–1 draw against Cameroon on 28 December, with Diallo again finding the net before the Indomitable Lions equalized.
Ivory Coast’s final group match, on 31 December, proved the most dramatic, as they recovered from an early 2–0 deficit against Gabon within the first 21 minutes, before Jean-Philippe Krasso scored a goal before half-time and late strikes from Evann Guessand and Bazoumana Touré, the latter in stoppage time, completed a 3–2 victory for secure first place.
Historically, Ivory Coast boasts a strong pedigree as three-time champions who consistently progress through the tournament, a record bolstered by a seven-game unbeaten run in the AFCON finals, including four victories.
Head-to-head, Ivory Coast have faced Burkina Faso 20 times in all competitions and hold the advantage with nine wins to Burkina Faso’s three, as well as eight draws, while remaining unbeaten in their two previous CAN meetings, with a draw in 2010 and a 2-0 victory in 2012.
Burkina Faso’s journey to the round of 16 has been marked by steady progress in Group E, starting with a 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea on December 24, with Lassina Traoré among the goals.
A 1–0 defeat against Algeria followed, but qualification was confirmed on 31 December with a 2–0 victory against Sudan.
Ivory Coast are in good health heading into this match after Fae turned heavily in the final group match against Gabon.
Yahia Fofana is expected to return in goal, with Guela Doué, Odilon Kossounou, Evan Ndicka and Ghislain Konan forming the defensive unit.
In midfield, Ibrahim Sangaré, Seko Fofana and Franck Kessie are expected to be restored, while Amad Diallo, Yan Diomande and Evann Guessand are all pushing for recalls in attack.
For Burkina Faso, goalkeeper Hervé Koffi is doubtful after being forced into the half-time break in the 2-0 win over Sudan with a thigh injury. He was replaced by Kilian Nikiema.
Cyriaque Irie is also doubtful after being substituted in the same match due to a suspected injury.

This round of 16 should be reasonably balanced, with both teams showing good signs in the group stage. Burkina Faso’s disciplined structure should ensure a competitive contest, but Ivory Coast’s experience, offensive depth and status as reigning champions give it a limited overall advantage.
