Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has called the club a “complete mess” and believes Gareth Southgate should be brought in to provide stability.
United this morning sacked Ruben Amorim after an uninspiring 14 months in charge amid suggestions of a fallout with sporting director Jason Wilcox over his reluctance to move away from a preferred 3-4-3 system.
It means the club are now looking for their seventh full-time manager since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. United is currently sixth in the ranking.
Bosnich told BBC Radio 5 Live: “There needs to be some clarity behind the scenes. They thought they were putting together a team that was there for long-term success, but it hasn’t really worked.
“And going back to the talk about ego and so on, it should be very clear. It should be manager/head coach, whatever you want to call them, he’s the one who has to set the tone, he’s the one who has to define the culture because it’s his name that’s on the draft.
“The others? Regardless of ego, the club and the team have to be doing well, because at the moment the fans – and I can understand it – are going to be tearing their hair out because they want to know what’s going on and they deserve to know what’s going on. At the moment it’s a complete disaster.”
Southgate was linked with the job before Amorim got it and Bosnich believes he could replicate the work he did with England which saw the Three Lions reach two successive European Championship finals.
He added: “I’m biased because I’m a friend of his, but I would choose Gareth Southgate. We know he was touted before Ruben Amorim.
“He took England from their all-time low and took them to two major finals in terms of the European Championship and the World Cup semi-final.
“He’s great at personal relationships and I really think right now he’s standing out.”
It has been reported that United will look to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season, a situation which could please Southgate, who has made it clear he has little appetite for another long-term project.
Under-18s boss and former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will lead the team for Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Burnley.
While waiting for summer, United could have several club and international managers to choose from whose contracts are expiring, including Oliver Glasner, Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann and Carlo Ancelotti.

Whatever the choice, former United manager René Meulensteen believes it must be someone with ‘pedigree’.
He said: “They don’t want to make another mistake and very quickly turn to someone who they’re sort of trying to fill the void with. They really need to look.
“At the end of the day, it’s not just about Ruben Amorim. It’s also about Ineos and the whole team behind this. Because they basically didn’t stand behind what they said. So there are also some questions to ask. They don’t want to make the same mistake.
“They need to be really calm and say ‘what do we need?’ What do we need to make sure United get back on track, United style?
“They need someone with pedigree. Someone who understands the Premier League, who has been successful in the Premier League. Someone with a strong personality, with charisma. Someone with a good vision on how to take Manchester United forward.
“The most important thing is that they need to get things in order in the background first. And be very, very clear that when they make an appointment, everything is aligned.
“At that point, it wasn’t aligned.”
