All 116 people injured in a bar fire at a Swiss ski resort have now been identified, authorities said.
Forty people were killed in a fire which ravaged a busy place in Crans-Montana on New Year’s Eve. The ages of the victims varied between 14 and 39 years old.
While the dead had all been identified previouslyWork was underway to determine who were injured, some of whom remain in critical condition.
Swiss police confirmed on Monday that 83 people were still hospitalized, among the injured were at least 12 nationalities.
Most of the injured suffered serious burns, which in some cases prevented their identification, police said.
Investigators said 119 people were injured, but that figure was revised downward in the latest update.
A criminal investigation launched into the French couple who ran Le Constellation bar – a venue known to be popular with a younger crowd in the ski resort, where the minimum drinking age is 16.
Sparklers on bottles carried too close to the ceiling were likely the cause of the fire, according to a preliminary investigation.
Béatrice Pilloud, chief prosecutor for the canton of Valais, said in a statement that investigators were looking into whether the acoustic foam on the ceiling of the room was “at the origin of the problem”, as well as “if it complied with regulations”.
Details have begun to emerge about some of the people who lost their lives in the tragedy.
Among them was Charlotte Niddam, aged 15, who was a pupil at two British schools. Her family wrote on social media: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful daughter and sister Charlotte.”
The mother of 16-year-old Arthur Brodard confirmed he died in the fire.
She said in a video message: “We can begin our mourning, knowing that he is in peace and in the light.”
Italian media cited junior golfer Emanuele Galeppini, 16, among the victims.
Italian Golf Federation paying tribute to the “young athlete who carried with him passion and authentic values”.
