Barcelona close to re-signing Portuguese defender João Cancelo with an agreement until the end of the season.
The 31-year-old spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Barca from Manchester City and is now set to return after 18 months in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal.
Flick had initially planned to sign a central defender this month, but with Ronald Araujo is available again the former Bayern Munich boss is happy to move for Cancelo.
“I spoke with my staff and we think that when Ronald returns we will have good alternatives in central defense. João can play on both wings,” he said.
“It’s not a done deal, but I’d be happy if it comes to fruition. We’ve talked about signing a central defender, but it’s a good option for these six months.
“We’ve had a situation the last couple of years where we have to be smart with the players we sign. We can’t spend billions. Our players are progressing. Our kids are developing and we have confidence in them.
“Now we have an opportunity to bring in a veteran. I would appreciate him coming.”
Cancelo has won league titles in Portugal, England, Germany and Italy and hopes a move to Spain will help cement his place in the national team for this summer’s World Cup.
