President Donald Trump said Tuesday evening that Venezuela’s interim authorities would hand over between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil to the United States.
Trump, who announced the transfer in a social media poststated that the oil will be sold at market price, “and this money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure that it is used for the benefit of the people of Venezuela and the United States!”
“I have asked Secretary of Energy Chris Wright to execute this plan immediately. It will be transported by storage ships and brought directly to loading docks in the United States,” Trump wrote.
The announcement comes three days after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife in Caracas and took them to New York, where they are charged in a federal indictment with drug trafficking conspiracy.
