The incident occurred in the 45th over of England’s second innings. Green, arriving from Paddington End, bent his back to extract an abrupt rebound from the deteriorating surface on Day 4.

The message was aimed directly at the body, rising abruptly to Bethell’s helmet. The young left-hander, who has been one of England’s few shining lights on this tour, attempted to come off the line but was beaten by the pace and size of the 6ft 6in Australian.

The ball slammed into the side of Bethell’s helmet with a sickening crack, the force of the impact knocking him off his feet and onto the SCG turf.

Bethell continues to fight for England
