Troy Williamson vying for fairytale world title against undefeated knockout artist

Troy Williamson was on a three-fight losing streak until September, but after a sudden change in form, the fan favorite is on the verge of winning the world title.

Williamson lost to Caoimhin Agyarko and Ishmael Davis at the national super welterweight level before moving up to the middleweight division and a trip across the pond resulted in a third straight loss, falling to Jahi Tucker last April.

The Darlington-based operator then opted to move up another weight division and defeated Mark Dickinson for the English super-middleweight title on his 168lb debut, before a sensational victory saw him stop Callum Simpson to win the British super middleweight crown.

The triumph lifted Williamson to 6th place in the IBF super middleweight rankings, dominated by undefeated Cuban artist Osleys Iglesias, who will fight for the vacant IBF crown in his next fight.

It is understood that Canelo Alvarez (IBF #3) and Jaime Munguia (IBF #4) have turned down the opportunity to face Iglesias for the world title, and Hamzah Sheeraz (IBF #5) is reportedly taking advantage of his favorable position with the other sanctioning bodies, leaving Williamson next in line for a chance to become Britain’s ‘Cinderella Man’.

On X, Queensberry Promotions head of boxing Lee Eaton reacted to the news of Williamson’s surprise shot at the super middleweight crown.

An official order is expected soon. If negotiations fail and tenders are called, Eye of the Tiger Promotions, which organized the five Iglesias’ last five outings in Canada since capturing the signature of “El Tornado”, will be keen to win the fight, but could face stiff competition from Matchroom, who works with Williamson.
