Fran Drescher had no problem taking on “the kings” of the Hollywood industry.
Drescher feared she would never work again after successfully leading the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023. The “Nanny” star feared being blacklisted — before landing a role alongside Timothée Chalamet in the film. Golden Globe nominee the film “Marty Supreme”.
“It’s great for me, because I took on the kings of our industry, and if there was ever a blacklist, baby, my name would have been on it,” Dresher said. Drescher was president of SAG-AFTRA when the union clashed with major studios and streaming giants. She claimed the strikes were actually what helped her land the role in “Marty Supreme.”
The film’s director, Josh Safdie, and Drescher were working on another film that was abandoned due to the strikes. The two men remained in contact throughout the negotiations.
“It made us friends, because I always answered his calls,” she told the outlet. “And then ‘Marty Supreme’ It was his next movie that was planned, and Josh felt like Timmy and I were sort of alike. And he said, “I know your background and I know there’s a depth in you that I want to mine for this film.” I know you have it in you. You have to love a director like that. They’re always the good ones.”

Drescher’s first notable appearance was with “Saturday Night Fever” in 1977. She then landed her big break with the role of Fran Fine in “The nanny.” The series ran for six seasons, cementing Drescher as a household name.
She wanted to act from a young age, taking inspiration from “I Love Lucy.”
“I could do that,” Drescher remembers telling his mother. “I could do physical comedy, make funny faces, wear pretty dresses.” She began making her dream a reality by joining the high school theater group.
“I auditioned and got a McDonald’s commercial and a root beer commercial,” she recalls. “Neither of them let me speak. Even my high school drama teacher told me, “If you want to succeed, you need to get rid of that voice!” » »

Drescher enrolled in elocution classes where she learned to speak “low and slow,” working to fade her Queens accent. The plan apparently backfired when she went to audition for a period piece.
“’She speaks very slowly for an 18-hour mini-series,’” the casting director then told her manager. “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m a pretty girl with a funny voice who can do comedy.’ This is my weak point. Let’s call it what it is.”
“I would never have had Meryl Streep’s career. And I didn’t have to be able to do a lot of accents. I could play a variety of emotions depending on the women who come from where I come from.”
