Canelo Alvarez proposed return fight against dangerous rising star: ‘We will sign tomorrow’

Canelo Alvarez lost his super middleweight throne four months ago, but the Mexican superstar has refused to walk away from the sport. Now the 35-year-old is offered a fight against a British fan favorite for his return to the ring.

Alvarez’s seven-year reign at 168 pounds ended in September, when he was overtaken by the great Terence Crawford in the standout fight and performance of the 2025 calendar. Although Crawford’s performance was phenomenal, many fans felt like Canelo’s was both disappointing and eye-opening.

Meanwhile, Slough-based Hamzah Sheeraz has emerged as one of the potential top dogs at super middleweight after a impressive beating of Edgar Berlanga in his debut in the division in July.

Talk with Box NationPromoter Frank Warren explained why Sheeraz was able to put on such a dominant performance.

“It was a brilliant performance from him, a lot of people I know didn’t like him. I liked him because he was comfortable at that weight. Before that he had really struggled to make the weight.

“It’s his natural weight now, he’s really comfortable with it and I think this fight has really brought him even more.”

Warren then revealed his willingness to set up a clash between Sheeraz and Canelo, adding his belief that Sheeraz would defeat the four-division world champion if given the chance.

“I would do him and Canelo tomorrow, if they defended him. It’s a great fight and I think he [Sheeraz] would beat him.

“I don’t know [if Canelo wants that fight] but he is a fighter. If I were him, I would think I would find better options, but I would love for this fight to happen.

Canelo recently withdrew from a vacant world title match against Cuba’s Osleys Iglesias due to his recovery from elbow surgery. He should return around September.

Sheeraz, meanwhile, was ordered by the WBC and WBO to fight for their vacant belts, with the choice between Christian Mbilli and Diego Pacheco respectively. If he wins a world title, Canelo might be more inclined to enter into negotiations.
