Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson’s 2026 Mystery Miniseries Is a Must-See on Netflix

Listen, I know on-screen thrillers there are plenty of them these days; as a fan of the genre and someone who has read over 100 suspense books in 2025, I understand if you’re feeling a little tired. That said, I think you should try the new thriller mini-series “His & Hers”; it’s on Netflix, has a pretty excellent cast, and was developed by William Oldroyd, director of suspenseful films like “Eileen” and “Lady Macbeth.”

Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal lead the series, which focuses on their respective characters – TV presenter Anna Andrews and small-town detective Jack Harper – and opens with a shocking murder, with the camera lingering on the bloodied body of a woman lying on the hood of a car. As Jack sets out to investigate, Anna, who happens to be his ex-wife and is returning to her TV job after a year away, due to the deaths of her and Jack’s child, also shows up, complicating everything. Worse still, the first murder victim – Rachel Hopkins (Jamie Tisdale), the one on the hood of the car – was friends with Anna while they were in high school, and their group of friends, which also included Jack’s sister Zoe (Marin Ireland) and another woman named Helen Wang (“Hacks”, Poppy Liu), was pretty Toxic, to say the least. This is what brings Anna back to the town of Dahlonega (located about a 90-minute drive from Atlanta), where she reunites with Jack and his mother Alice (Crystal Fox).

I should note that, without spoiling anything, you should definitely check the trigger warnings for “His & Hers,” especially since the story sticks pretty closely to the plot of Alice Feeney’s book of the same name, which serves as its source material. Let’s dig into this a little more.

Tessa Thompson is an extraordinarily talented actress who can elevate just about any material given to her, and that’s true again in “His & Hers,” where we immediately learn that Anna is a little troubled (if her arriving home with a strange tooth injury and drinking an open bottle of wine is any indication). Again, we know that she and Jack lost their daughter Charlotte, an incident that tore their marriage apart and sent Anna fleeing to Atlanta for work, while Jack remained in Dahlonega to continue working as a detective.

Spoilers aheadbut after Rachel’s death, Helen and Zoe are found murdered, and each woman has a hand-woven friendship bracelet in her mouth that was discovered by the coroner… and stranger still, these specific bracelets were made by Anna when she was 16 and given to her friends, as we see when Anna visits her childhood home and finds an identical bracelet in her box of childhood possessions. Despite the fact that Jack and Anna clearly have unresolved feelings and potentially want to rekindle their relationship, Jack begins to become wary of Anna’s potential involvement, and Jack’s new junior partner Priya (Sunita Mani) is also understandably wary of Jack, who was having an affair with Rachel before her death (and does his best to cover this up by planting his niece’s DNA instead of his own, lest he become the prime suspect in Rachel’s murder).

I won’t spoil the whole ending of “His & Hers”, but it’s savageto say the least…and if you’ve read Alice Feeney’s book, it’s exactly the same conclusion. Still, he packs a punch on screen.

“His & Hers” is the first major adaptation based on one of Alice Feeney’s novels, so I have some good news for you: if you liked this series, there will apparently be more coming soon. Feeney, familiarly known in thriller circles as the “queen of twists and turns,” excels at clever, mind-bending revelations that are just wacky enough to work. Having read literally all of his novels so far, I can tell you that they are fast-paced delights that leave you in shock when you’re done. Not only that, but Feeney is also quite prolific. Her first thriller, “Sometimes I Lie”, was released in 2018 and tells the story of a woman emerging from a coma who tries to understand her past… and while an adaptation has been announced with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the lead in 2024 (via Deadline), nothing has been done yet. Maybe if “His & Hers” is a decent success, there could be some movement on that front.

Likewise, in 2021, Netflix obtained the option to adapt Feeney’s novel “Rock Paper Scissors”, published the same year (via Variety). But again, there hasn’t been anything like that since. Most recently, his book “Beautiful Ugly” was planned to be adapted for the screen upon its publication in 2025 (also via Variety), and his next book, “My Husband’s Wife,” arrives January 20, 2026. Hopefully, with “His & Hers” making waves, that means we’ll soon get to see more of Feeney’s deeply twisted, deliciously dark stories unfold on the big or small screen. In the meantime, “His & Hers” is streaming on Netflix.
