Shreyas Iyer is all set to make his much-awaited return to India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11 in Vadodara. The Indian middle-order batter also has a good chance of making a comeback in the T20I against the Black Caps.
Iyer is currently not part of India’s T20I plans, but Tilak Varma’s injury could also see the Mumbaikar make his T20I comeback against New Zealand this month. However, just days before the first ODI, the right-handed batter faced a strange and shocking moment off the field.
A video from the airport has gone viral, where a little puppy almost bit off his fingers. The incident happened when Iyer tried to be friendly with a fan’s pet while he was leaving the airport. After signing an autograph for his fan, Iyer tried to pet his puppy, but the effort ended up scaring him.

Fortunately, the 31-year-old batterer suffered no injuries and survived the dog bite. The Indian star shrugged off the incident with a smile before heading towards his car.
Earlier, the Indian cricket team got a big relief ahead of the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, as Shreyas Iyer is finally all set to return to international cricket after a long and scary injury phase. Iyer has now been declared fully fit for the match by the medical team at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
The middle-order batter was seriously injured during the third ODI against Australia in October last year while trying to catch a diving Alex Carey. It used to seem like a normal field effort, but it turned into a medical emergency. After the SCG ODI, scans at a Sydney hospital showed internal bleeding due to a spleen laceration.
Doctors immediately admitted Iyer to the hospital, where he was kept under close observation. He had to undergo minor surgery to control the bleeding. Australian medical experts have been in constant contact with the BCCI medical team to closely monitor his condition.
Only after his health improved was he allowed to return to India, where his recovery continued carefully at the BCCI CoE. Although he was named among the 15-member Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, his place was not confirmed earlier.

His selection was entirely dependent on medical clearance from the Center of Excellence. Now the star hitter has that clearance, clearing the final hurdle to his return.
Notably, Shreyas Iyer had already made a comeback to domestic cricket before donning the national colors. Iyer has led Mumbai in two matches and has shown good signs with the bat in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26.
He scored a brilliant 82-run knock against Himachal Pradesh and followed it up with a steady 45 against Punjab, proving that he is ready to shine on the big stage once again.
