Real Madrid do not plan to sign during the January transfer window, according to the major Spanish daily Marca.
Although Xabi Alonso’s side are suffering another injury crisis defensively, the newspaper reports that president Florentino Perez has no plans to authorize a major acquisition this month.
This news will come as a big disappointment to the club’s supporters, who must have seen that Madrid have struggled up to this stage of the season, producing a string of average performances.
They remain four points behind League leader Barcelona despite the weekend’s victory against Real Betis.
Barcelona, the next challenge for an under-equipped Madrid
Madrid are currently in Saudi Arabia recovering from last night’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final victory over rivals Atletico. They assume Barcelona in the final on Sunday.
They will do so with a makeshift defense that will include midfielder Federico Valverde at right back.
Madrid have suffered from injuries at the back over the last 12 months, with Eder Militao, Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold all missing significant time.
They have been linked with a £45million move for Borussia Dortmund’s Germany international Nico Schlotterbeck, but that is unlikely to materialize.
Indeed, reports Marca, the Madrid hierarchy believes that the club “will have sufficient resources when the injury epidemic is resolved, particularly in defense”.
The club “is therefore not considering going to the winter market in search of reinforcements. [the club’s training ground] Valdebebas believes the situation is cyclical and it is only a matter of time before Xabi’s resources are replenished and injuries are part of the reality at elite clubs.
