Wrexham reached the fourth round of the FA Cup by stunning Premier League side Nottingham Forest on penalties after a six-goal thriller at the Racecourse Ground.
Arthur Okonkwo was Wrexham’s hero with penalty saves to deny Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson, giving the Championship side a 4-3 victory on penalties after Josh Windass, Callum Doyle, George Thomason and Jay Rodriguez converted from the spot.
In front of Hollywood owner Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham took control thanks to first-half goals from Liberato Cacace and Oliver Rathbone.
Reynolds was exchanging high fives and hugs as Phil Parkinson’s team appeared headed for the fourth round and it should have been three – and perhaps even a fight over – when Sam Smith ran through the forest half uncontrolled but failed to beat the outstretched leg of Matz Sels.
Forest boss Sean Dyche made a triple substitution at half-time with Neco Williams, Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolas Dominguez sent on to save the day and Jesus reduced the deficit before Dominic Hyam’s diving header restored Wrexham’s two-goal advantage 16 minutes from time.
Forest looked dead and buried but substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi headed home 60 seconds later to stage a grandstand finish at the Racecourse.
Hudson-Odoi took the tie into extra time in fantastic fashion, touching his chest and launching a perfect volley past Okonkwo, but Wrexham were not denied in the shootout as they claimed their first top-flight FA Cup scalp for 26 years.
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on TNT Sports:
“Luckily we have good analysts to help us and I looked at them before the game.
“Really happy to get those two saves and win the game.
“The manager spoke to us before the game and told us the history of the club and we are capable of beating teams way above us.”
On what was on the water bottle: “I can’t tell you, it’s a secret!”
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson on TNT Sports:
“It was an up-and-down game. The late goal put us to the test a bit in the first period of overtime.
“I said to the guys at the break ‘come on, we’ve come a long way here, let’s not give up now’. It was almost a little acceptance.
“Even though they made changes at half-time, I still felt we looked dangerous and were still a threat. It’s a massive night and I’m happy these players are writing their names in the club’s FA Cup history.
“The guys rallied together [for extra-time] and there were a lot of tired legs on both teams.
“It’s thanks to both teams for putting on such a good match after such a busy Christmas schedule.”
Wrexham will have all eyes on the FA Cup fourth round draw when it takes place on Monday January 12.
The draw will take place at Anfield before the final match of the third round between Liverpool and Barnsley.
This should start around 6:30 p.m..
