Newcastle United could be set to strengthen their defensive ranks as they push for an exciting full-back who is of interest to several clubs.
The 2025/26 season got off to a slow start for Newcastle, who entered it with a Carabao Cup and Champions League victory for the second time in three years. With three wins in their last Premier League matches, however, the Magpies sit sixth in a crowded top-flight table.
They spent a lot of money this summer to revitalize their attack, and although Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey have failed to find consistency since their big money transfers, German striker Nick Woltemade has been an undisputed success.
Now in the middle of the January transfer window, it appears that Eddie Howe is keen to strengthen his team at the other end of the pitch after suffering several injuries which have left his defensive ranks threadbare.
The manager confirmed Fabian Schar’s injury was “perhaps not as serious as it first appeared” this week, but admitted the experienced defender was facing a period of inactivity.
“He obviously has an injury but no fracture. We think it’s just a ligament injury but he will see a specialist in the coming days to get some definitive answers, but perhaps more positive than the initial assessment.”
Meanwhile, Jamaal Lascelles is not currently training due to a lack of fitness, and Emil Krafth and Dan Burn are both suffering from long-term injuries. It is therefore not surprising to see PIF turning to the winter market to strengthen its ranks.
According to reports via GIVEMESPORTNewcastle are one of three Premier League teams to have expressed an interest in right-back Wesley Franca.
The Brazilian established himself at Flamengo, joining Roma in the summer of 2025, where he quickly became a key part of the team led by head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
Despite transfer interest from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle appear to be ahead of the race, although any deal for Franca would be difficult to complete in January.
Flamengo coach and former Chelsea defender Felipe Luis has praised the young defender in the past, saying: “He’s the kind of player who will decide where he wants to play in June. There’s no ceiling for this kid; he’s exceptional.”
Full-back is certainly an area where Newcastle need depth, with the experienced Kieran Trippier now 35 and past his prime.
Tino Livramento, for his part, has long been a goal for Manchester City and if the England international were to leave, it would be imperative that the Magpies bring in a sufficient replacement.
Comfortable in both defensive and offensive phases of play, Wesley Franca would be a phenomenal addition for Newcastle. At just 22 years old, his profile would suit the high-intensity football that Newcastle have become known for under Howe’s stewardship.
However, it remains to be seen whether an agreement can ultimately be reached between the two clubs.
