Fighters react to Dalton Smith’s stunning knockout of Subriel Matias to win world title

Dalton Smith entered the lions’ den, fought fire with fire and snatched the WBC world welterweight title to add to the list of great Britons who have won top honors on the outside.

Many had predicted that Sheffield’s Smith would have to box smart against the relentless champion. Subriel Matias, who had been involved in controversy before the PED fight but was cleared to fight by the New York State Athletic Commission. Some in the sport — including Hall of Famer Tim Bradley — didn’t give the challenger a chance.

After a measured opening match at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, Matias began to impose his will. Smith, coached by his father Grant, made the decision to trade and paid the price with a cut above the eye in the third. It seemed to be going the Puerto Rican’s way until he was caught late in the fourth.

The Steel City man got into a fight in the fifth and his courage paid off – Matias was rocked by two right hands and knocked down by the next blow to his temple. His legs were wobbly as he stood up and referee Ricky Gonzalez stepped in to stop the action and score a truly sensational victory for the new champion, Smith.

After the fight, the performance drew praise from peers, analysts and fans.
