Russell Dickerson reflects on his small-town roots.
THE country music starwho grew up in Tennessee and is best known for hit songs like “Yours” and “Blue Tacoma,” has spent the last decade building a successful career in country music that has taken him from rural fairgrounds to some of the genre’s biggest stages, including an upcoming performance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Speaking with Fox News Digital, Dickerson said fun in his family growing up revolved around small-town traditions.

“Absolutely…we didn’t really go to the movies. We went to rodeos, tractor pulls and that was my thing. redneck entertainment to grow.”

That upbringing is now coming back in a very real way for the country singer as he prepares to take the stage at one of the country’s most iconic rodeos.
“So to come full circle at RodeoHouston, I get to play my music there, it’s amazing.”
For Dickerson, this milestone takes on additional meaning beyond his own career, as it is a moment he wants to share with his family.

“Yeah, I mean, we’ll probably bring my oldest son, Remington. He’ll probably be there, because it’s the greatest show of my life. And he has to see this. I think he’ll freak out.”

On Wednesday, January 7, Dickerson helped bring RodeoHouston culture to New York, participating in a ephemeral performance in Times Square as part of the national promotion of the event. This appearance gave fans a glimpse into the Western traditions that shaped his upbringing ahead of his upcoming performance at the HoustonRodeo.
“I’ve never seen so many cowboy hats and boots crowding Times Square. It’s a wonderful sight, and country music is universal like that.”

The appearance in New York’s Times Square was just part of a bigger moment for Dickerson, as the invitation to RodeoHouston marked a major milestone in his career.

Dickerson said the opportunity was particularly meaningful as an artist.
“I remember when I got the call. I was just at the gym, you know, and my manager – they were like all three of them were on the phone. And I was like, ‘This is weird.’ And they say, “Hey, we just wanted to tell you all at once that you’ve been invited to play at RodeoHouston.” And I was just like, “Oh, I mean, an absolute bucket list.” » It’s been said before, but it’s an absolute honor to be one of these artists present this year. »
The moment comes as Dickerson is enjoying one of the biggest years of his career. His song “Happen to Me,” released in March 2025, took off and helped bring his music to an even wider audience.
Dickerson said the response surprised him, calling it “absolutely out of nowhere”, and thanked fans for embracing the song and showing up along the way.

He is scheduled to perform at RodeoHouston on March 5, 2026, joining an all-star lineup including Chris Stapleton, Kelly Clarkson, Luke BryanLainey Wilson, Tim McGraw, Lizzo and Cody Johnson, among others.
