Dozens Arrested, Police Officer Injured During Minneapolis ICE Protests

Watch: Thousands march in Minneapolis to protest ICE

Thousands of people participated in another night of protests in Minneapolis on Saturday, following the death of a woman who was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in the city.

Earlier, city officials said 30 people were arrested during weekend protests and one police officer was injured after a “piece of ice was thrown at them.”

Protests against immigration measures took place across the United States after Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot to death in her car on Wednesday.

The Trump administration said the officer who fired the shots acted in self-defense. Local authorities insisted the woman posed no danger.

People gathered in Minneapolis on Saturday evening despite bitterly cold weather, while anti-ICE protests also took place elsewhere in the United States, including Austin, Seattle, New York and Los Angeles.

The city of Minneapolis said Saturday that “the vast majority of community members demonstrated peacefully.”

On Friday evening, Minneapolis police declared an unlawful assembly as protesters gathered outside the Canopy Hotel in the city, where ICE agents were likely located.

Minneapolis police said in a statement that “several hundred people” were present and “some individuals forced entry to the hotel through an alleyway.”

Videos posted online showed protesters holding up bright lights in the area, whistling and banging drums.

Police said some threw ice, snow and rocks at officers, police cruisers and other vehicles, but no serious injuries were reported.

A law enforcement officer was slightly injured but did not require medical treatment, according to CBS News, the BBC’s American partner.

Authorities said another hotel in the city was also targeted and had its windows and graffiti damaged.

At a news conference Saturday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey applauded the majority of protesters who he said were peaceful, but noted that individuals who cause property damage or endanger others would be arrested.

Those arrested Friday evening were later released, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said.

Many Minnesotans have been frustrated by ICE’s presence in the state, and O’Hara said his department receives dozens of phone calls each day regarding the federal agency’s operations.

On Saturday, three Minnesota lawmakers also attempted to tour ICE facilities in Minneapolis. The women said they were initially allowed in, but then told to leave.

Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar, Kelly Morrison and Angie Craig said ICE and the Department of Homeland Security were preventing members of Congress from fulfilling their duty to oversee operations there.

“They don’t care that they’re violating federal law,” Craig said.

“The public deserves to know what is happening at ICE facilities,” Omar posted on X.

Previous video shows the incident from another angle

Good was shot and killed in her car Wednesday.

Videos of the incident show ICE agents approaching a car that was in the middle of the street and telling the woman behind the wheel to get out of the SUV. One of the officers pulls the driver’s side door handle.

As the vehicle attempts to drive away, one of the officers in the front of the car points his gun at the driver and several gunshots are heard.

The car then continues to drive away from the officer and crashes onto the side of the street.

Good’s wife told local media that the two men had gone to the scene of immigration enforcement activities to support their neighbors.

The officer who shot Good is Jonathan Ross, a veteran ICE agent who was previously injured while on duty when he was hit by a car.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed the ICE agent shot Good multiple times because she tried to run the agent over in her car.

But Minneapolis’ Democratic Mayor Frey called that version of events a false narrative, saying it was clear to him that she was trying to leave the scene, not attack an officer.

The FBI is investigating the incident.

On Friday, Minnesota officials announced they would open an investigation into the shooting after saying they had been excluded from the federal probe.

The announcement comes a day after the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the FBI initially committed to a joint investigation and then changed course. The US vice president said the investigation fell under federal jurisdiction.
