Anthropic announces Claude for Healthcare following the reveal of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health

In the wake of OpenAI ChatGPT Health reveal, Anthropic announcement On Sunday, he introduces Claude for Healthcare, a set of tools for providers, payers and patients.

Like ChatGPT Health, Claude for Healthcare will allow users to sync health data from their phones, smartwatches and other platforms (OpenAI and Anthropic have said their models will not use this data for training). But Anthropic’s product promises more sophistication than ChatGPT Health, which appears to be focused more on a patient-side chat experience as it gradually rolls out.

Although some industry professionals are concerned about the role of LLM prone to hallucinations by offering its customers medical advice, Anthropic’s “agent skills» seem promising.

Claude added what he calls “connectors” to give AI access to platforms and databases that can accelerate research processes and reporting for payers and providers, including: the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Coverage Database; the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10); the national registry of supplier identifiers; and PubMed.

Anthropic explained in a blog post that Claude pour la Santé could use its connectors to speed up the review of prior authorizations, a process by which a doctor must submit additional information to an insurer to find out whether it will cover a drug or treatment.

“Clinicians often report spending more time on documentation and paperwork than actually seeing patients,” Mike Krieger, Anthropic CPO, said during a product presentation.

For physicians, submitting prior authorization documents is more of an administrative task than one that requires their specialized training and expertise. This is something that makes more sense to automate than the actual process of administering medical advice… although Claude will do that too.

People already rely on LLMs for medical advice. OpenAI said that 230 million people talk about their health with ChatGPT every week, and there is no doubt that Anthropic is seeing this use case as well.

Of course, Anthropic and OpenAI warn consumers that they should consult medical professionals for more reliable and personalized advice.
