A few days after the authorities arrested his mother and stepfather on suspicion of child abuse, Oklahoma police confirmed they located a 12-year-old boy Ryan “RJ” Davis alive and well.
The child was found on Sunday January 11, near the town of Ciment. about 19 miles — or a 26-minute drive — from Chickasha, where RJ was last seen on Jan. 2 around 11 p.m.
After he was reported missing, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol issued an endangered missing person advisory.
Detectives, who had said throughout their investigation they always believed RJ was alive, have yet to provide information on how the boy got there. It is also unclear how police learned of the boy’s whereabouts.
RJ’s disappearance sparked a massive search. “After days of searching, hoping and praying, we can say that the outcome we all hoped for has come true,” said Hunter McKeespokesperson for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, during a press conference Sunday.
McKee said the boy was found in Caddo County on Sunday around noon local time. It was also unclear whether the child was in the same area the entire time.
Regardless, McKee told reporters that the child had been examined by medical professionals but was overall in “pretty good shape.” He? also said the boy appeared to be in “good spirits” when he was found.
The search for RJ involved hundreds of volunteers to help search for the boy, including the United Cajun Navy, a local volunteer search and rescue group, whose members were the ones who located the child.
The rescue team spoke to the media at a press conference and said the boy was found inside. They said his first words were: “I’m sorry.”
RJ’s mother, Kimberly Coleand his father-in-law, George Colewere both taken into custody on Wednesday, January 7, on charges of child abuse, child sexual abuse and conspiracy.
“During the conversation with them, it was learned that apparent harm had been caused to this child while living with these two parents,” McKee told reporters.
McKee said the child’s mother and stepfather remain in custody at the Caddo County Jail. The local prosecutor will likely decide to formally charge the couple on Monday, January 12.
It is currently unclear whether either parent has obtained legal representation following their arrest.
RJ is now in state custody and is in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.
“We will work closely with DHS to ensure that [the boy] is placed in a safe home, which he deserves,” McKee said.
Acting Chickasha Police Chief Goebel Music told reporters last week that Davis would not be returned to his parents’ custody once found. “Here’s what I need from everyone listening. This child is not going back to this house,” Music said. “All we want to do is lay eyes on this child, give him the medical care he needs and assure him physically and emotionally that he will not return to that environment.”
