The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) raided three locations, seizing 231 illegal slot machines and more than $157,000 in illegal gaming proceeds in Lake County.
Made under the code name “Calvin Coolidge”, the FGCC operation targeted three locations suspected of hosting illegal gambling houses in Umatilla and Leesburg in Lake County on Thursday, January 8. The raid saw the seizure of 231 illegal gaming machines and more than $157,000 in illegal gaming products, one of several recent raids like State cracks down on illegal gaming operators.

The three sites were identified through the FGCC’s joint means of complaints, intelligence gathering and investigations.
“These enforcement actions demonstrate our commitment to protecting Florida’s communities and preserving the integrity of the state’s gaming laws,” said FGCC Executive Director Alana Zimmer. “Illegal gaming operations undermine legal businesses and exploit customers. FGCC will continue to work proactively with its law enforcement partners to shut them down.”
A joint effort to combat illegal gambling in Florida
The FGCC teamed up with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to raid the Treasury House in Umatilla and two locations – Hot Seats and The Hub – in Leesburg. Investigators seized 56 illegal slot machines, including slot machines and fish tables, along with $75,619 in cash, at the Treasury House. Hot Seats is one of the gambling venues linked to the criminal case involving Marcos Lopez, Osceola County Sheriff.
At the other two locations, 77 illegal slot machines and $35,621 in suspected gaming proceeds were seized from Hot Seats, while 98 illegal slot machines and $46,597 in cash were found at The Hub.
Summons were issued to all locations for possession of slot machines and running a gambling house.
According to Florida gambling laws, slot machines are only permitted in legal gaming establishments. Additionally, there are only eight licensed facilities in Miami-Dade and Broward, aside from those operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida under their exclusive tribal rights. Penalties for illegal possession of slot machines range from a second-degree misdemeanor for a first conviction to a third-degree felony for repeat offenders, which can result in fines ranging from a $5,000 fine to five years in prison, or both.
Operating a gambling house is generally a more serious crime in Florida, often classified as a third-degree felony and punishable by penalties of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
