Former Liverpool boss steps away from management after leaving Reds
Jurgen Klopp insisted he had not been contacted by Real Madrid following The departure of Xabi Alonso of the club.
Klopp has failed to do so since leaving Liverpool in 2024 and is now Red Bull’s head of global football, but he has inevitably been linked with the vacancy created by Alonso’s departure.
Speaking on Austrian channel Servus TV, the former Liverpool The director decided to distance himself from the speculation.
“I think the rumors have been circulating for a while now. And I know exactly where your question is going, but it has nothing to do with me,” Klopp said when asked if his phone started ringing after Alonso left.
He added with a smile: “He did ring, but not from Madrid”, insisting that the situation “didn’t affect him at all”.
Klopp expressed sympathy for Alonso, who he described as a very talented manager, and suggested the speed of his departure was indicative of wider problems at the Spanish giants rather than a personal failure. “It’s another sign that something isn’t working perfectly there,” he said.
“This shows several things: on the one hand, that we [coaches] I no longer have time, and on the other hand, the demands of Real Madrid are, logically, enormous.
Klopp admitted he was surprised by how quickly Alonso’s tenure unfolded and noted that reports of tensions between coach and team emerged relatively early on.
“I think when you come after a legend and an incredibly good coach, who had a very specific way of training his team, Carlo Ancelotti, if you come there and try to implement new rules, this time it seems like it turned out to be too difficult,” he said.
Despite the setback, Klopp expressed confidence in Alonso’s long-term prospects, saying he felt sorry for him and supported him to succeed elsewhere in the future.
Asked if Alonso could now be a candidate for a return to Liverpool, Klopp played down the idea of an immediate move. He said he did not think Alonso would leave his job in Spain “and be ready to start elsewhere the next day”, but acknowledged changes were likely to the managerial landscape in the coming months.
“A lot of things are going to happen this summer,” Klopp said, adding that the coaching market “will be reshuffled.”
