Manchester United have appointed former midfielder Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.
The 44-year-old succeeds Ruben Amorim, whose 14-month reign ended on January 5 after the Portuguese criticized the club’s hierarchy.
Former Chelsea and England assistant manager Steve Holland will assist Carrick alongside Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion and goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson.
United, who are three points adrift of fourth place in seventh, host Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday (12:30 GMT).
Holland was at Chelsea between 2009 and 2017, working under André Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Antonio Conte.
Now 55, he was appointed permanently by Southgate in 2017 and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of Euro 2020 and 2024 with the Three Lions, although he only served four months as manager of Japanese club Yokohama F Marinos before leaving in April 2025.
Former England centre-back Woodgate worked with Carrick at Middlesbrough and was teammates of United director of football Jason Wilcox at Leeds,
Former United defender Evans returns to Old Trafford, with Binnion already at the club as head under-21 coach.
In his first managerial role, Carrick took over from Chris Wilder as Middlesbrough boss in October 2022 and guided his new club from 21st to a final position of fourth in the Championship.
They were beaten 1-0 by Coventry City in the play-offs and finished four points from the play-offs the following season despite a run of seven wins and one defeat in their last 12 games of 2023/24.
Middlesbrough battled for a play-off place and finished fifth with six matches remaining in 2024/25, but five consecutive defeats between January and February and a run of four points from their last six games saw Boro finish 10th, winning 18 and losing 18 of their 46 league matches.
Carrick built a reputation for attractive football and had hoped to continue, but many fans were unconvinced and the Boro board decided to make a change in June, with the head coach, his brother Graeme and his assistant Woodgate also leaving.
Carrick spent most of his youth career at North Tyneside club Wallsend Boys and joined West Ham in 1997, winning the 1998/99 Youth Cup with the Hammers.
A senior debutant in 1999, he had loan spells at Swindon Town and Birmingham City before establishing himself in West Ham’s first team in 2000/01.
Alongside teammate Joe Cole, Carrick was beaten to the PFA Young Player of the Year award by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at the end of that campaign, before suffering relegation the following season and helping West Ham to finish fourth in the second tier in 2003/04.
Tottenham then paid £2.75 million for Carrick, who played 63 times in two seasons before rejecting a new deal to join United for a fee of up to £18.6 million.
A United player between 2006 and his retirement in 2018, Carrick was part of the Red Devils team that won the 2007/08 Champions League.
He was named in the 2012/13 PFA Team of the Year and was the United Players Player of the Year in the same season.
While captaining United in 2017, Carrick suffered from an irregular heartbeat and underwent a cardiac ablation procedure to correct the problem.
After briefly returning to playing, Carrick then began his coaching career with manager Jose Mourinho’s team.
Carrick joined the United squad after retiring as a player in 2018, working with Mourinho and his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Following Solskjaer’s exit on 21 November 2021, Carrick oversaw a 2–0 win at Villarreal in the Champions League thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, as well as a 1–1 draw at Chelsea in the Premier League in which Sancho scored again.
Ronaldo scored two more goals, including one from Bruno Fernandes, as United then beat Arsenal 3-2 at home in the league.
Carrick left the club following the arrival of Ralf Rangnick as caretaker manager. United lost one of their next 14 league matches, but won three and lost seven of their last 13 of the campaign, finishing sixth and exiting the Champions League to Atletico Madrid in the last 16.
Out of 464 matches for United between 2006 and 2018, Carrick also won the Premier League five times and the 2015/16 FA Cup.
The third of his EFL Cup titles with the club came in the same season that Carrick won the 2016/17 Europa League under Mourinho.
Called for the first time by England At under-18 level, Carrick won 34 England caps between 2001 and 2015, being part of their World Cup squads in 2006 and 2010.
