The list of sci-fi shows that have never been able to complete their first season is worryingly long. Some, like Fireflynever aired some of its best episodes. There is one, butugh, this remains overlooked by almost everyone because it’s a different type of science fiction, and it’s more accurately described as “Grey’s Anatomy in space. » This is not a criticism, because Defy gravity shares a creator with Shonda Rhimes’ hospital drama.
Those who watched it on ABC would be forgiven for thinking it was more drama than science fiction, as it was canceled one episode before a wild twist.
Defy gravity is set in 2052 but frequently returns five years earlier, to 2047, as it follows a team of astronauts aboard the Antares as they begin a multi-year journey through the solar system. Then in flashbacks it shows how they were recruited and trained for the mission.
The astronauts are constantly recorded and monitored by Mission Control, but that’s not the most disruptive part of their journey. The beta is hidden in storage, and that’s all they know about it. In one way or another, the strange container influences their dreams, their thoughts, and perhaps even their emotions.
The mystery of the beta was enough to keep me watching Defy gravity aired on ABC, making me one of dozens of people who were upset. Each episode was heavy on relationship drama, since this is a Shonda Rhimes show, but the mix was surprisingly difficult. science fiction for a network series.
The team must deal with a solar flare, sudden system outages, and the psychological impact of crossing the “point of no return” on the path to Venus. Few shows have addressed the mental difficulty of living in space to this extent.

The casting is naturally drawn more from soap operas than sci-fi epics, and this is reflected in the melodramatics aboard the Antares. On the one hand, it’s great to see a sci-fi series show romance. On the other hand, they come across the wild hallucinations that dominate most episodes.
The moment of Defy gravity the cancellation perfectly prevented the public from learning the true nature of the astronaut’s mission around the galaxy. Just when the true sci-fi aspect of the series was going to come into play, which, yes, means alienshe was snatched from the air.
Hints of a larger universe and what awaits them out there were limited to streaming services or, while I was watching it, Netflix DVD by mail.
