A 32-year-old man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to permitting an illegal gaming house for profit, the Michigan Gaming Control Board confirmed.
The man, Gurjinder Singh, was sentenced by Kent County 62A District Court Judge Steven M. Timmers to a two-year misdemeanor. As part of the sentencing, he must also pay $500 in fines, fees and court costs.
“This conviction sends a clear message that illegal gaming will not be tolerated in Michigan,” MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said in the report. announcement.
“We encourage all business owners to follow the law and remind the public that unregulated gambling puts players and communities at risk.”
The case dates back to a joint investigation by the Michigan Department of Attorney General and the MGCB which had received reports of suspicious activities in a place of business. In February 2024, investigations subsequently identified two stand-alone slot machines that closely resembled machines used in licensed commercial casinos.
According to investigators, customers could play the machines and exchange their winnings for Visa gift cards. MGCB claims this arrangement was intended to circumvent Michigan’s legal requirements regarding gaming activities, which poses risks to consumers.
“Illegal gaming operations may seem harmless, but they can contribute to other forms of crime, lack consumer protections and divert revenue from community priorities,” Williams said.
“We appreciate the strong collaboration with the Department of the Attorney General and local law enforcement to bring this matter to a close.”
THE Michigan Gaming Control Board works in partnership with law enforcement agencies across the state to investigate illegal gaming operations and take enforcement action where necessary. They say these efforts help ensure that licensed operators compete fairly and that Michigan residents are protected from predatory or dangerous gaming environments.
