Visiting an 18th-century fountain in Rome will cost you more than the coin you throw into the water.
Starting in the new year – February 1, 2026 to be exact – foreign visitors will have to pay around $2.35 (€2) for visit the Trevi Fountain.
The Eternal City has introduced a new pricing system for its museums and monuments on December 18.

“The introduction of the access tariff to the reservoir of the Trevi Fountain arises from the experiment started during maintenance work completed in December 2024,” indicates the city’s website.
It has become “possible to collect fundamental data on influxes and to test new methods of use to combat overpopulation and protect the monument,” the press release continues.

The historic fountain attracts about 30,000 visitors per day, with peak days reaching 70,000, or more than 9 million visitors per year, according to the city government.

Rome residents, people with disabilities and children under five years old are exempt from this fee.

During last year’s renovations, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said: “The situation at the Trevi Fountain is becoming technically very difficult to manage.”

In 2023, some 36 million tourists visited the Lazio region, where Rome is located, according to the annual Roma Capitale statistical report.

More than $1.52 million was collected in 2023 in the form of coins thrown into the Trevi Fountain, Fox News Digital previously reported.
