A resource officer was reportedly removed from active duty after allegedly assigning Lanier Johnson-Huntan 18-year-old student on a school bus in Atlanta.
According to Atlanta News FirstThe incident occurred on Thursday, December 18. According to the media outlet, a school bus was transporting students from Langston Hughes High School when a resource officer and a student were involved in a “confrontation.” According to Johnson-Hunt, the officer was “new” and “thought he didn’t belong on the bus.”
When Johnson-Hunt refused to get off the bus, “the resource officer punched him several times.”
In an interview with Atlanta News FirstJohnson-Hunt says he was kicked out of school. Additionally, the media reports that the resource officer has been “removed from active duty.” Nonetheless, footage of the incident went viral online, with Fulton County Schools apparently releasing a statement:
“The incident is being taken seriously and is currently being investigated.”
Meanwhile, Johnson-Hunt told the press:
“At the moment, nothing was going through my mind. I’ve never been assigned tasks before. But now I think it’s crazy. You’re a school resource officer. You’re supposed to help us, and you’re tasking random kids. There’s no point in tasking me at all.”
By WSB-TVthe 18-year-old has now retained the services of civil rights attorney Harry Daniels.
“It’s obvious in the video that this young man was not a threat to anyone. He was just trying to get home and take care of his autistic brother, and they assigned him for that,” Daniels explained, adding more context to the apparent circumstances.
The Atlanta incident isn’t the only one making headlines in connection with a high school. As The shadow room previously reported, in November 2024, a high school football coach was reportedly suspended for watching NSFW videos in a classroom at Miami Jackson Senior High School.
At the time, CBS News obtained footage of one incident, which showed the coach looking at the equipment in the presence of at least one student. Ultimately, the Miami-Dade school district released a statement explaining that the coach would be fired while an investigation was conducted.
