There have been many bumps in the road since Liverpool this season, but there has been some festive cheer at Anfield of late.
Indeed, Arne Slot‘s men have not tasted defeat since a 4-1 Champions League humiliation at the hands of PSV Eindhoven, with the Reds showing plenty of fight and quality to turn around their once tricky situation.
Hugo Ekitike, in particular, has been shining lately Premier League wins against Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, with three goals conceded, seeing Match of the Day pundit Shay Given hail him as the “a real deal” in attack.
Liverpool won’t be content with the personnel that make up their forward positions, however, as Alexander Isak now looks set for a lengthy absence on the bench, which will result in a new target striker appearing on the Reds’ shopping list…
It has now been revealed that Isak will be out for several months due to a serious injury he suffered against Spurs, as his nightmare start on Merseyside only gets worse.
Lose it £125m striker for a significant period of time means Liverpool will surely have to go out in January to recruit a new corps, with the top flight’s second top scorer, Brentford’s Igor Thiago, reportedly catching their eye.
A report from Caught offside revealed that the reigning Slot champions are monitoring Thiago as they pursue attacking reinforcements, with Antoine Semenyo also still on their radar despite the likelihood of him signing for Manchester City.
Brentford are, however, noted to be reluctant to part ways with one of their main stars midway through a season, with a bold Priced at £70 million now above the head of the former Club Brugge player.
Yet that could be the price Liverpool have to pay if they are to sign one of the most in-form strikers in the division, with the Reds not at all regretting their pursuit of Sadio Mané in 2016, having poached the current Al-Nassr striker from bottom of the division at Southampton, only to turn him into a modern-day legend.
Mane cost £36m to obtain in the summer of 2016, having stood out as a lively striker for the Saints, much like Thiago is showing now at the G-Tech Community Stadium.
Looking back, Mané had only just started in the Premier League at St. Mary’s, with 25 goals and ten assists in 75 appearances on the south coast, enough to attract the attention of Liverpool.
He would then go on to shatter those numbers at Anfield, with the Senegalese striker reaching a superb tally of 120 goals and 46 assists for Liverpool, before his sensational journey ended on Merseyside in 2022.
Yet his former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp would be right to say the winger is one of “Liverpool’s greatest players”, having scored crucial goals to win the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League during his glittering spell.
In the 2019/20 title-winning season alone, Mané scored 18 important league goals, as he was further noted as being a “world class” finisher by the German, and deserving to be in the “same support” as the division’s best striker by reaching a century of goals at Anfield, by former Liverpool teammate Georginio Wijnaldum.
Of course, Thiago, at present, is nowhere near as revered in the Premier League, but as Mane did further down the top flight, he has made quite an impact.

But with 11 devastating league goals already scored this season for Keith Andrew’s Bees, the “phenomenal” The marksman – as he has been rightly praised by his manager – shows why he deserves such a £70 million move, to try and replicate Mane’s breathtaking exploits.
He even won the entire league’s Player of the Month award for November, thanks to his consistent talent. “Magnificent” performances for the west London side – as Andrews also waxed lyrical – surely giving him a hunger for a higher level, with Mane not looking back at all when he deserted Southampton all those years ago.
Stepping up to the plate for Brentford this season, after Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa left the building in quick succession, also shows a striker who can thrive under pressure, as Thiago will perhaps get a big Mane-style break in January if Liverpool make use of his services.
